Born into a well-known family of stage artists, Yuriria Fanjul grew up in Mexico City absorbing and following the creative footsteps of her family’s spirit. She was mentored from an early age by her grandfather, actor & composer, Ferrusquilla, and her aunt, Angélica Aragón.
After graduating with a BA in Humanities specializing in Contemporary French Philosophy, Art History and Voice studies (UDLAP), she studied a two-year Physical Theatre Masters Degree at the London International School of Performing Arts (LISPA) in collaboration with Naropa University. Additional training includes: Pedagogical Training in the Lecoq Methodology (Embodied Poetics – UK-Sweden-Lithuania), Performance Research Labs at Panthéâtre in the ROYHART International Artistic Centre (France), and Suzuki/ViewPoints with the SITI Company (Wales-NYC-Paris).
As an actress, she has performed repertory works in numerous productions and festivals such as Shakespeare at The White Bear, The Nursery Festival, BE Festival, CASA Festival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Festival Internacional Tamaulipas, Tällberg Foundation, Oaxaca Book Fair, and for Save the Children Mexico. Her first solo performance, Camille Claudel (Teatro La Capilla 2019, Sala Xavier Villaurrutia 2019, 2021, 2024, National Tour Festival Teatro a Una Sola Voz 2021 and 2024, Teatro Benito Juárez 2021, Centro Cultural Helénico 2024), was named Best Play of the Year (ACPT 2019), one of the top three plays of 2019 in Mexico by Confabulario El Universal, nominated for Best Monologue (ACPT), and selected by the Festival Una Sola Voz (INBAL 2020), United Solo Festival (NYC 2020), Sistema de Teatros (CDMX 2021), and World Stage Design (2022).
As a stage creator, she has co-created and performed in several devised theatre works, including: ¿Qué pasa contigo Juanita?and El Aleph (Casa Festival London), Herencia Española (BE Festival, Birmingham), El tejido de los sueños (The Space, London), Filigrana de papel, Red, The Contemporary Theatre Museum, Home Alone (Shelmerdine Close, London), Cabared (Bilbao, Spain), and The Lord of the Rings (The Boys Club, London).
As a librettist and screenwriter, she is the author of Lady Oscar Salome, a play about the life and work of Oscar Wilde; the opera libretto Stay in México Ópera 360º; and her original TV comedy Seis Herencias, which won Best TV Pilot Script in Latin America (Filmmarket Hub).
Her opera directing credits include: Dido and Aeneas by Purcell (Bremen Hochschule, Germany, 2011), The Turn of the Screw by Britten (Budapest, Hungary, 2011), La Creciente by Derbez (Festival Internacional Cervantino, Guanajuato, 2015), L’Orfeo by Monteverdi (Festival del Centro Histórico, Palacio de Bellas Artes, CDMX, 2017), Dido and Aeneasby Purcell (Festival IM.PULSO UNAM, 2019, and Festival del Centro Histórico, CDMX 2020), and was movement director of four new operas commissioned by the UK-based GestaltARTS: Adrift, A Leap in the Dark, Clive, and Liquid History (London, 2012–2017). She has also directed revivals like An Opera of Daniel by Lambert (Solistas Ensamble, INBA, 2019) and served as movement director in Albert Herring by Britten (Solistas Ensamble, INBA 2018), among others. She has been assistant director for operas such as Susanna by Handel (Iford Arts Opera Festival, UK) and Cendrillon by Massenet (Royal Academy of Music, London). As a member of the Young Vic Directors Program and Stage Directors UK, she participated in English National Opera productions including Powder Her Face by Thomas Adès.
In 2024, she received three grants to develop La Ópera de los Monstruos, a project in collaboration with the children's theater company Flotante (Peru/Argentina), with funding from FONCA Artistic Residencies, Ibermúsicas Mobility Grant, Fundación SURA, and Latimpacto (Colombia). This children’s opera premiered at the Universidad del Pacífico in Lima, Peru in 2025.
Her additional musical studies include classical voice with Prof. María Huesca (Central School of Speech and Drama, London), Hebe Rossel (Mexico), Linda Wise (France), Verónica Alexanderson (Mexico), and Joyce Wells (NYC); as well as Indian classical music and Hindustani raga (Daisy Paradis, NYC – Mumbai). As a soprano in the UDLA-P Chamber Choir, she performed at venues such as Palacio de Bellas Artes and Sala Nezahualcóyotl, and in festivals like América Cantat IV (Mexico), Corhabana (Cuba), and Florilège Vocal de Tours (France), where the choir received two international awards and recorded two CDs with Quindeccim Recordings.
She has 15 years of teaching experience, training actors and singers internationally (Faculty of Music at UNAM, ESMUC – Barcelona, Royal College of Music and Drama – Wales, The Complete Works London, Bright Young Things Tuition London, etc.), and is a regular coach for international speakers, including renowned architect Rozana Montiel. She has taught theater creation and community theater workshops at Stanford University, Universidad Panamericana, UVA Tlatelolco, TeatroUNAM, The MonoBox London, and Pro-Ópera México, among others.
She co-founded and co-curated the IM.PULSO Festival of Music and Stage (UNAM, 2017–2018), which focused on fostering new opera creation in Mexico, producing around eight original music-stage works per year and creating a support system for young creators. She is the founder and artistic director of STAGE of the ARTS México, a company that developed the urban dance opera-ballet Stay in México Ópera 360º, produced by MúsicaUNAM and featuring the Antiqva Metrópoli orchestra and choir, along with 30 migrants from Mexico’s northern border.
For two years she was head of the Music Department at an international not-for-profit cultural organization in the US, and studied North-Indian Harmonium and Raga with Daisy Paradis.
Most recently, she was awarded by Filmmarket Hub for her comedy pilot Seis Herencias, and invited as a collaborator with the Brooklyn-based opera company Vision Into Arts, staging Primero Sueño, an opera about Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC as part of the MetLiveArts program.
Yuriria Fanjul is a multidisciplinary artist represented by MoJo Global Arts Management in Los Angeles, California.
Currently, Fanjul works as an independent actor, director and performing arts coach for singers internationally and at the Opera Studio, as part of the National Opera Company in Mexico. She produces her personal projects, and promoting arts education and collective creation.
